A review of international approaches to advance equality on behalf of the Scottish Government

Leading Kind was commissioned by the Scottish Government to explore how other countries advance equality through their structures, strategies, and policies.

Our Approach:
Our multi-lingual team of researchers conducted an extensive review of international practices, complemented by expert interviews, to identify what works, what doesn’t, and why.

Key Findings:

  • Robust Legal and Institutional Frameworks: Independent oversight bodies and robust legal protections are key drivers of progress.
  • Leadership and Political Will: Equality thrives when it's embedded in national priorities, with clear accountability at the highest levels.
  • Co-Design and Community Engagement: Successful strategies involve those most affected by inequality, ensuring policies are relevant and effective.

Impact:
Our research provided the Scottish Government with actionable insights to inform future policy development, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable Scotland.
